Naptime was only half-way restful. Shawn fell asleep without a lot of fuss, but Abby decided she wanted nothing to do with sleeping… or quiet time. She was asleep for a little while, but it was less than an hour. Bill told me a few days ago that sometimes she wakes herself up from a dream or something and can go back to sleep if you don’t go in to get her. So, I left her alone. She screamed for a little while. She cried for a while. Then she realized she could knock on the wall and door from her pack & play. (Note to self: adjust pack & play position tomorrow!) Finally, she entertained herself by talking until I eventually came in. At least she had some down time, if not actual sleep. Then we went back to being uneventful again.
In the evening, Shawn discovered the big cardboard boxes that I use to bring the goods from Costco. Nearby, he also found a giant package of toilet paper and another of tissue boxes that I hadn’t put away yet. Before I knew it, he had the four lined up and was perched on top calling out, “Choo-chooooooo! Wooo-woooooo! Shawn’s driving a chooo-choooo TRAIN!” I don’t think I could describe it well enough and luckily I had my FlipVideo close by…
and some still shots...
He also showed off a skill that Abby has taught him. He has a much loved ride-upon Disney airplane that he got for his first birthday. As you saw in pictures from last week, he really likes to play with it; however, he’s never shown much interest in the shape-sorter windows on the body of the plane. He’ll play with the shapes and he’ll push the little buttons inside the windows to make the characters talk and play music, but he’s never been very interested in actually putting the shapes into the shape-sorter windows, as they were intended. Until now. When he took a short break from his Costco train invention, he sat down beside his airplane and, out of the blue, stuck the shapes into their windows. He got so excited and was so proud of himself that he did it over and over again, squealing and dancing each time he was able to manipulate the shape in the right direction so it would fit into its window. (I think he was able to match the shapes pretty easily, but turning them so they’d go through the holes was a little more challenging.) Then, he got back on his box-train for another “ride.”
Later, Shelley called. Apparently, the two partners in crime were in cahoots. I don’t know how they let each other know, but they both decided to stay up late and rally against going to bed. That wasn’t why Shelley called, but we had to cut our conversation short because Shawn was reviving his anti-sleep strike and we could barely hear each other over the phone. Luckily, the strike didn’t last much longer and we went back to being uneventful again.
Thank goodness! Sometimes being uneventful is just fine!
