It's so hard to reach the middle!
Shawn worked very hard helping me start organizing the
guest room / craft room / my office.
When we both were ready for a snack, Shawn found a box of teaching
materials and got very excited about
using them himself.
First we did an intro to fractions using a plastic hotdog
(1 whole), hotdog bites (1/10ths), and hotdog slices (1/100ths) in a bun that
was labeled in 1/10ths. He liked the fact it was a hotdog, but was more
interested in stacking the pieces than the fractions they represented. That's
ok, he understood the super basic idea that fractions are pieces that make up a
whole.
Lately, Shawn's been really curious about counting to
100. He still gets a little mixed up, so
I got out a number grid and decided to combine a counting lesson with our snack.
First, he counted by 1s by putting Cheerios over each number. Then, we replaced
some of the Cheerios with chocolate chips and counted by 10s, then 5s, and
finally 2s. While we had every other number covered in Cheerios & chocolate
chips, we talked about odd and even numbers. Shawn loves patterns and caught on
quickly. (Who wouldn't when there's chocolate involved?!)
